This exploration delves into the fundamentals of western vocal music, examining aged melodies and stirring anthems alike. You will not want to miss this journey through the depths of human expression, where the purity and strength of the human voice weave stories of passion, triumph, and introspection.

Sadie will perform selections from Songs of Lament and Praise by Gilda Lyons, Nadia Boulanger's "Cantique," and "Les lilas qui avaient fleuri" by Lili Boulanger with pianist Nicholas King.

LA VOIX HUMAINE

September 4 (Penn State Recital Hall) & 7 (Kilbourn Hall), 2024

Sadie staged and performed Francis Poulenc's monodrama La voix humaine in Kilbourn Hall at the Eastman School of Music and at Penn State with collaborative pianist Maeve Berry.

Described by the composer himself as “a musical confession,” La voix humaine depicts a turbulent conversation between a desperate woman and her estranged lover in which the audience hears only one side of the conversation. Revealing her instability through lies and anxious outbursts, "Elle" attempts to keep her absent lover on the phone for as long as possible in order to prevent the inevitable farewell. Poulenc's adaptation of Jean Cocteau’s play of the same name stays honest to the raw emotion of the text, blending his distinctive style—marked by his unique harmonic language and irregularity of phrases—with the dramatic intensity of the narrative.

AWAKENING | City Lyric Opera

March 20, 21 & 22, 2024

This past spring Sadie co-created, performed and directed AWAKENING, a staged, collaborative song recital inspired by the tradition of protest music with soprano Abagael Cheng. Also featured on the program were pianist Ava Linvog and violinist Yoonjung Hwang.

This intimate, original program of songs, chamber works, and spoken poetry centers themes of rebellion and solidarity and poses the question: what does freedom look like to you? Spanning five languages (Chinese, English, French, German, and Persian), AWAKENING addresses social injustices of gender, race, and class through an international lens. When we acknowledge the illusions of the Western, capitalist, imperialist system, we open the door to join in the collective movement for creating a radical, community-centered world. Through a range of stories, from heroism to survival to friendship, this recital serves as an invitation to unpack the societal structures imposed upon our minds and move towards structures of connection, joy, and love.
